Warner Bros. dropped the second trailer for director Greta Gerwig’s next film Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie. Slated to release in July 2023, the film’s plot has been kept under wraps from the public, raising anticipation. Coupled with the posters broadcast on the film instagram account, featuring the film’s cast framed by the ultra-recognizable sun-shaped Mattel logo, fans are ready for what should be a summer hit.
The film’s marketing team also created a selfie generator allowing everyone to join in the fun and become a citizen of Barbie Land. The message is clear: there is more than enough room for this dinosaurTHE discard of Puss in Boots 2, Harry StylesTHE discard of Succession, Gerard Road of the emo group My Chemical Romance, hype man and rapper of Public Enemy Flavor Flavor, Andy Sachs Since The devil wears PradaAnd Jobu Tupaki Since Everything everywhere all at once everything to exist in the world of Barbie.
What can be gleaned so far from both trailers and stills suggests that the new movie doesn’t shy away from camp, fully embracing Barbie’s dream world utopia. It’s an idyllic Malibu, California, where the sun shines non-stop and the color pink fills every surface imaginable.
The iconic and nostalgic aesthetic will also be present in a ephemeral culinary experience is set to open in New York and Chicago next month, and Bucket Listers will work with Mattel to host a Malibu Barbie Café featuring Chef contestant Becky Brown in Elmhurst, New York. All the hype seems to bring out Barbie’s most unlikely fans, including gangstersTHE Shout series’ ghost faceAnd Super hero.
The cast is full of stars: Will Ferrell as CEO of Mattel; Robbie, Issa Rae and Kate McKinnon as three of several Barbies; and Ryan Gosling as one of the few Kens. It’s part of the magic of Gerwig’s Barbie world. There are endless types of Barbies that will appear in the film; she can be anything and everything: president, surgeon, gymnast. As Euro-pop group Aqua said in their 1997 hit song, “Life in plastic is fantastic.”
However, Ken is “just Ken”, as the posters point out. Gerwig and all of the Kens understand Ken’s mission and place in Barbie history. Speaking about his role, Gosling joked with Jimmy Fallon on The show tonight that “Ken was a prop and not even one of the coolest.”
Some appreciated Gerwig’s attention to detail in the stills that some tore up while analyzing. A lot noticed Barbie’s extreme arch as Robbie walks on her toes through the trailer, echoing the unnatural shape of doll’s feet. And film critic Jillian Chilingerian chose a Citizen Kane reference in a scene from Barbie as President.
Here’s to more ridiculous, campy, fabulous and over the top Barbie memes and reactions to tide you over until the movie hits theaters this summer.
