Join the Craft Center and Hyperallergic for a free online presentation and panel discussion with this year’s Craft Archive Fellowship cohort. Hosted by Hrag Vartanian, this special event will feature fellows’ research into underrepresented craft histories in the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as recently presented in a special edition of Hyperallergic. The virtual Craft Archive Fellowship program is scheduled for Thursday, July 20, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (EDT).
Xenobia Bailey, Jeffrey Gan, E. Gale Greenlee and NE Brown, Maru López and Siera Hyte will take us through eight months of archival research documenting stories that have been erased or are otherwise missing from mainstream narratives of craftsmanship. With topics such as Cherokee craft pedagogies, Kentucky’s historic black craft schools, Indo Californian dance culture, and more, this work acknowledges overlooked legacies and the contributions of marginalized artisans and communities.

The Craft Archive Fellowship aims to highlight the different ways an archive can be a resource for uncovering stories of craftsmanship that have always been present but have been overlooked or lacked proper documentation. Taking a broad understanding of what an archive is and can be, fellows can use various repositories to find primary sources such as digital or in-person archives, institutional and community-created archives, objects, oral histories and even sites and places. Through our partnership with the Center for Craft, we are proud to make this work freely available online, helping to reduce barriers to archival research and amplifying craft scholarship.
