The Savannah College of Art and Design presents the work of alumni Mona Bozorgi (MFA, Photography, 2018) and Emma Creighton Hopson (MFA, Photography, 2021) at London pictures, the UK’s premier photography fair, at Somerset House from 10-14 May. Each year, Photo London brings the best photography to the UK capital, highlighting new perspectives as well as historic and vintage works.
Exploring the materiality of their medium, Bozorgi and Hopson reinvent the constructions of the creation of images through the act of re-photographing. Each of their distinct practices considers themes of femininity and femininity beyond patriarchal systems. In fatal object, Bozorgi examines the commercialization of the body using techniques reminiscent of product photography. By juxtaposing human subjects and physical objects, she channels the transformative power of photography into multi-layered images that challenge female objectification. In I wish you were there, you are, Hopson rejects patriarchal idealizations of the maternal. Using herself and her children as her main subjects, she engages notions of nostalgia, growth and passing time, reflecting on the illusory condition of photography and the nuances and complexities of motherhood.
Hopson will participate in a artist talk during the fair in conversation with Ben Tollefson, curator at the SCAD Museum of Art, and Michael James O’Brien, holder of the SCAD chair of photography, on Thursday May 11 at 2 p.m. (GMT).
The two artists represent the best SCAD Photography Diploma Program, one of the university’s most popular programs.
