Artist draws inspiration from climate protesters – Brooklyn-based artist Jacqueline Humphries initially found the climate protesters’ target for museum masterpieces horrifying, but that emotional response quickly turned to fascination when she began to feel a connection with them. “They say art is powerful,” Humphries says. Inspired by the shock tactics of protesters, the artist has created a new body of work which is on display at Modern Art on Helmet Row and Bury Street in London which opens this week, coinciding with London Gallery Weekend. Newfields chief wants to recover from ‘tragedies’ – Colette Pierce Burnette, the new president and CEO of the 152-acre cultural campus that includes the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), is working on new collaborations to put the institution’s reputation back on solid footing after a bid job for a new IMA director accused of being racist. The Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum ends this week – The hit show that forced the Amsterdam museum to open overtime to meet public demand ends this Sunday. One of the artist’s most famous paintings, The girl with the pearl, has already returned to the Mauritshuis in The Hague, causing some confusion among visitors, but has not dampened public enthusiasm for this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. Hartmut Dorgerloh is renewed at the Humboldt Forum – Dorgerloh, who has led the Berlin-based cultural center since 2018, will continue in office for another five years, as decided by the board of the Humboldt Forum Foundation. According to the President of the Board of Directors and Minister of State Claudia Roth, the Forum must be “a place of democratic and cosmopolitan debate, a place of exchange and polyphony”. USLAF Names 2023 Latinx Artist Fellowship Class – Fifteen artists of Latin American or Caribbean descent have been awarded the 2023 Latinx Fellowships, which consist of $50,000 in unrestricted grants given to each artist. Administered by the only national organization focused exclusively on visual arts and Latinx artists, the class this year includes artists Mario Ybarra Jr., Postcommodity and Beatriz Cortez. A Blade of Grass Appoints New General Manager – Lu Zhang will be the new executive director of the New York-based socially engaged arts organization beginning June 20, 2023. Zhang previously served as director of initiatives for the national arts funding organization United States Artists and also deputy director of the alternative, collection-free museum The Contemporary in Baltimore, MD. In 2020, A Blade of Grass made a dramatic change in response to the stressors of the pandemic and let go of all of its full-time staff and discontinued its lauded fellowship program. (Press release)
Presentation of the Joan Miró Prize 2023 – Vietnamese-American artist Tuan Andrew Nguyan is the winner of this year’s Joan Miró Prize, for which he will receive €50,000 ($53,000) and will present a solo exhibition at the Fundació Joan Miró in 2024. Nguyan’s practice” is informed by its research and engagement with communities that have faced trauma from colonialism, war and displacement”. (Press release)
Liverpool Museum Acquires Eurovision Butter Churn – The museum acquired the wooden churn that went viral when the British city hosted Eurovision last month on behalf of Ukraine, who won the 2022 edition.Museum Journal)
Xavier Hufkens takes over from Leon Kossoff – The Belgium-based gallery now represents the late British artist, who died in 2019, at Art Basel in Basel in June. (Press release)

London Gallery Weekend Returns – London’s annual gallery weekend returns this week. From June 2-4, this year’s edition features more than 150 galleries offering new exhibitions, late-night openings and live events. Nicole Bachmann, Li Hei Di and Minh Lan Tran were shortlisted for this year’s award performance program presented jointly by LGW and UP Projects. Art world figures such as curator Cedric Fauq, creative director Rejina Pyo and artist Larry Achiampong have shared their gallery recommendations in the curated itineraries section. The artist duo Gilbert & George, meanwhile, offers a “no galleries” recommendation for this weekend, and instead a highlight of restaurants and places to see in Spitalfields, where the recently opened center is located.
