Another day, another diary entry about one of our favorite artists, Yayoi Kusama…the nonagenarian Japanese artist posted a heartwarming new message to coincide with an exhibition of new work at the David Zwirner Gallery in New York this month. next (I spend every day kissing flowers, May 11-June 17). The exhibit, the gallery says, will feature new paintings and sculptures elaborating on its signature pumpkin and flower motifs, as well as a new Infinity Mirror Room (incidentally, the exhibit is named after three monumental floral sculptures that will fill the Zwirner space at 519 19th Street West). The new Infinity Mirror installation, Dreaming of the sphericity of the Earth, I would offer my love (2023), features round colored windows. “These openings let in a dance of natural and artificial light alongside the interplay of bodies that activate the immersive space,” adds a statement from the gallery. The artist issued “a poem of hope for the world” during the Covid epidemic. Here are Yayoi’s words of wisdom on the upcoming show (enjoy):
I sang the spirit of Kusama day after day, a song from the heart.
O young people of today, let us sing together a song from the heart of the universe!
