Unrivaled in its focus on health and safety and its wide range of equipment, the Community ceramic workshop at Powerhouse Arts (PHA) provides boutique members with robust facilities and resources, including dedicated staff to provide guidance and support.
The Community Ceramics Studio piloted its program with reduced hours beginning in the spring of 2023. Hot on the heels of its May opening, PHA is proud to launch the program in full, welcoming new applicants for membership. The new equipment enables a wide variety of processes including wheel throwing, hand sculpting/building, slip casting, 3D printing, custom decal printing, electric, gas and occasional raku firings (coming). The workshop’s gas and electric ovens vary greatly in size and the facilities are suitable for both small and large jobs. Notably, the organization also recently welcomed the arrival of a RAM hydraulic press, a machine rarely available to the public and which will allow manufacturers to significantly speed up the production of works that can be made from a two-part mold. It will eventually be offered to artists for daily rental.
Located on the sixth floor of Powerful Artsone of a kind, purpose-built on Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal, the quiet, bright, and quiet space features floor-to-ceiling arched windows with magnificent views of downtown Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. The organization prioritizes health and safety in its ergonomic workspaces by providing fresh, clean air, dust extraction, and equipment that can facilitate physically intensive processes. Most table heights and equipment are accessible to wheelchair users.
The studio – and PHA in general – hosts a diverse group of artists working in a variety of traditions and techniques, providing space for artists to develop their personal practice while creating opportunities to engage in knowledge sharing and community building.
