The historic Palm Beach estate owned by the billionaire publishing magnate Peter Brant and his wife, former supermodel Stephanie Seymour, hit the market for $28 million.
The historic 7,175 square foot mansion, nicknamed Buttonwood, is one of the last such homes in Palm Beach. According to SEO With luxury real estate firm Brown Harris Stevens, the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home is one of the oldest and rarest on Barrier Island, with many of its original details still intact.
The two-story house with Queen Anne-style influences features a pool, spa, veranda, library, wooden details and a wraparound porch supported by Tuscan columns on pillars of bricks. The lush half-acre property also includes a four-bedroom guest house to complete the idyllic retreat.
The Florida villa, purchased by Brant and Seymour in 1999 for $4.1 million, was built in 1901 as the residence of the city’s first mayor, Elisha Dimick. Currently it stands a few blocks from that original location, having been moved by logs to save it from demolition, first in 1920 and again in 1925.
Beginning in the 1960s, Brant acquired an extensive art collection while growing his father’s newsprint business into one of the nation’s largest publishers. Many of the 1,000 works of art he owns were created by Andy Warhol, whom Brant befriended after the artist asked to meet the young collector who acquired so many of his works. Brant remains one of Warhol’s greatest collectors and began publishing the Interview magazine shortly after his death in 1987.
In 2014, Brant purchased artist Walter DeMariathe former East Village home and studio to serve as museum space for the Brant Foundation. In 2018, the foundation organized an exhibition entitled “Andy Warhol: from A to B and back again», the first major retrospective of Warhol’s work in the United States for almost 30 years. From the month of May, the foundation present an exhibition featuring over 100 works by Warhol from Brant’s personal collection in an extensive survey of the artist’s practice.
The Buttonwood Estate, with its remarkable past, picturesque location and illustrious provenance in the art world, is a jewel in Palm Beach’s real estate crown. According to the listing, “This exquisite home…is ideal for large families or the discerning buyer looking to purchase a romantic Palm Beach classic.”
