About the artist: The artist behind Studio Six N. Five, Ezequiel Pini (b. 1985), is recognized for his pioneering digital art and use of 3D to create pristine, ethereal worlds in his work. Originally from Argentina and currently based in Barcelona, Pini’s interest in computing and new technologies began in childhood, honing his interest and skills with programming in high school. Pini then studied graphic design – a subject that allowed him to pursue computer science from a creative angle – at the University of Buenos Aires. In 2014, he created Six N. Five, a moniker and studio name inspired by the time of day (6:05 p.m.) that marked the end of a work day and the start of personal time, where Pini could enter his imagination and visualize arriving home to start working on his art and exploring new ideas. Today, however, the name Six N. Five largely refers to the start of Pini’s day, where he can fully immerse himself in new ideas and imaginary realms. Pini’s work through Six N. Five has become recognized for its hyper-clean aesthetic and psychologically transporting world-building.
What do you want to know: Stemming from a series of informal encounters – happening from New York to Doha and a few places in between – and a vision shared with Derrick Li of Triple XPini joined the ranks with Brands Raoul and Min Shi as an artist represented exclusively by Triple X. Specializing in digital art, the partnership between Triple X and Pini is both promising and relevant. Already, Li has coordinated the inclusion of Pini’s 2022-2023 work To flow at the 50th Anniversary Contemporary Auction at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, which goes live April 5, 2023. Triple X has maintained its mission to foster and promote the work of its represented artists, as well as cultivate a new ecosystem of sustainable digital art. By showcasing high-level digital art and engaging with scholars, critics, collectors, and others with a vested interest in creating a sustainable digital art ecology (vs. pinball machines or traders), Li is at the forefront of a new frontier within this avant-garde of digital art. guard.
Why we love it: Pini’s work as a whole centers on imaginary spaces, spaces the viewer could almost believe they can enter. The inspirations behind his work are diverse and drawn from a myriad of disciplines, ranging from art history, architecture, nature and cinematography. In pieces like To flow, the confluence of these influences is both recognizable and decidedly new, seamlessly orchestrated to form a cohesive view of Pini’s creative process and imaginative aesthetic. The mid-century modern and contemporary design is depicted with the same light and line as the natural landscape vignettes, and the easy flow of greenery and flowers mimics the natural flows in nature, such as waterfalls, wind , rain or sea; the addition of melodic sound and referring to the sound of moving or growing plants contributes to the creation of an all-consuming alternate reality – or rather an alternate reality. Referenced less literally, To flow also evokes the work of the surrealists, whose engagement with everyday life took on airs of mysticism through specific compositional interventions. To flow and other works by Pini easily transport the viewer into a meditative and hypnotic world that imparts an overwhelming sense of tranquility and poise, offering a deeply intellectual exploration of perception and aesthetics.
