The management of the M+ Museum in Hong Kong has found a clever way to get people to open up about their mental health, through the art of Yayoi Kusama. As part of the initiative Let’s talk to M+the museum will provide 10,000 free admission tickets to Yayoi Kusama: from 1945 to today to students at local institutions of higher education, including universities and other higher education institutions (free tickets can be used until the end of the show on May 14). “Throughout her life, Kusama has communicated her struggles with mental health to the world and spread messages of healing through her art. By sharing the iconic artist’s groundbreaking career and the depth and healing power of his art, M+ and should we talk [a programme devised by the government advisory committee on mental health] I hope to inspire new perspectives on life among students,” reads a project brief. Kusama’s work is filled with dots and vivid colors that she has experienced in hallucinations since childhood; she has lived as a voluntary resident in a mental hospital in Tokyo for more than four decades.
