Perspective is a prominent theme of Liste Art Fair Basel 2023, described by the fair as “My gaze, your gaze: the importance of positionality”. A historically and societally important premise for art, the “look” is shown here to be mutable and varied. The feminist gaze is one of these starting points, as in the work of Amber Andrews shown by Ciaccia Levi, Paris, where she studies how the perception of the female body differs between men and women. Elsewhere, Mina Squalli-Houssaini in Lodos, Mexico, sever female symbols from their ties to traditionally “feminine” domains, such as domesticity and craftsmanship. Another look or point of view highlighted is the environmental perspective, with artists focusing their attention on rapidly changing ecologies.

Another common thread is a re-engagement with the externality. Director Joanna Kamm says: “With Liste Art Fair Basel 2023, we are noticing a generation of very observant artists who are increasingly using time-based media such as video, sound, smell and performance to make statements. sociopolitical. Art becomes political again. In recent years artists seemed to have taken inward gazes as their starting point, but this year we are seeing a reversal of outward gazes.

The special project for the next edition is “Whistlers”, curated by Sarah Johanna Theurer and with contributions from Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst, Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira, and more. The exhibition focuses on sustainability and, more specifically, resilience and the myriad ways in which people, communities, ecosystems and capitalism cope with increasingly unstable, sometimes hostile environments. The title “Whistlers” takes its name from a type of low-frequency electromagnetic wave that occurs in nature but is undetectable by humans; using this as a starting point, the show investigates what is considered natural versus unnatural.

The theme of the special project coincides with the fair’s announcement that it has become an active member of the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC), a consortium of arts organizations and institutions working to reduce the environmental impacts of industry. art.

List Art Fair Basel will take place in Hall 1.1 of Messe Basel from June 12 to 18, 2023.
