It’s going to be a while before this casino opens in Times Square, so why not risk it all at Smack Mellon’s Gravity Racers Benefit and Silent Auction Saturday, May 6? Well… you wouldn’t be risking it all, because you and anyone who bets on an artist-created race car competing on the track will walk away with at least one of over 100 original artworks from the artist community by Smack Mellon.
Based in Dumbo, Smack Mellon is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to providing exhibition opportunities, year-long residencies, equipment resources and technical assistance to emerging and mid-career artists with less exposure. in the field. The Smack Mellon Advantage Returns for the Second Time to Their Dumbo Headquarters at 92 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn, in Honor of Pierogi Gallery’s 20+ Years The tradition of Gravity Racers through an incorporated Pierogi Boys menu. All proceeds retained will be used to support Smack Mellon’s mission to uplift today’s under-recognized artists.
It’s not just any kind of racing event either. Participating artists decorated their seven-inch pine derby car kits with crazy accessories that would both impress and baffle the guys from the body shop of MTV Pimp my ride. Among the cars competing this year are an oversized eraser by William Powhida, a “Beef Roast” by Lee Boroson and an Amanda Chung spiral sketchbook with Lucky Risograph. All eligible cars will compete in a race on the Gravity Slide track, and guests who bet on the winning cars will have first dibs to claim the original artwork of their choice. Either way, everyone will leave with a new work of art to take home.
If you don’t like betting but still want to feel the rush of victory, Smack Mellon is also hosting a silent art auction with call for tenders open now. Auctions will end during the event at 6:30 p.m. and attendance is not required to participate. Silent auction artists will receive 30% of the proceeds from the sale of their work.
