Hyundai Motor Group has announced the Grand Prize winner of the 5th VH AWARD for New Media Artists in Asia. A virtual ceremony took place on May 3 for the first screening of Subash’s winning work Thebe Limbu, Ladhamba Tayem; Future Continuous. Art by finalists Zike He, Riar Rizaldi, Su Hui-Yu, and zzyw was also showcased at this event.
Created in 2016, the VH PRICE discovers and supports emerging media artists by sharing their artistic experiences and showcasing their work on global platforms.
Subash Thebe Limbu received this year’s Grand Prize for Ladhamba Tayem; Future Continuous (2023). In this video work, artist Yakthung imagines futures where the actions and existence of Indigenous peoples cross the space-time continuum. Through a conversation between two indigenous people from very different backgrounds, Limbu asks viewers to investigate their own potential roles in finding possible futures worth pursuing while reflecting on the struggle against colonialism and the overcome the obstacles.
From October 4 to December 16, 2022, five finalists participated in professional development sessions and regular mentorship meetings as part of an online residency program hosted by New York-based art and technology center Eyebeam. York. Each artist received $25,000 to create an audiovisual project on screen. Additionally, as the Grand Prize recipient, Subash Thebe Limbu will receive an additional $25,000.
The works of the 5th VH AWARD finalists and Grand Prize winners are currently screened at HMG (Yongin, South Korea) and the Elektra Virtual Museum (Montreal, Canada). They will also be presented in various institutions and art platforms around the world, including Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria) and Museum MACAN (Jakarta, Indonesia).
