I tend to sleep like a log on my stomach with my limbs curled under me – an unhealthy habit learned growing up sleeping on an extremely firm spring mattress. On warmer nights I will sleep on my side letting the heat escape from my core, but without the right support this can also cause back, shoulder and neck issues over time. I currently sleep on a Tempur-Pedic mattress that matches my firmness preferences but has almost no edge support or temperature control, which is not a good feature for sleeping with a partner.
For scientific purposes, I controlled all other variables before getting into bed. I wore my usual sleepwear, spent too much time in the bathroom doing my nightly routine, adjusted the room temperature to almost cold, and caught my laptop to accompany me to bed so I can watch something.
At the risk of sounding trite, there’s no better way to describe this bed than what it must be like to sleep on a cloud. All my life, I had simply slept on a bed, but this? That was what sleeping In a bed looks like. Immediately, my body settled into the layers of the mattress to then be supported by each individual spring as they each reacted to my assertive pressures. It was an orchestra of materials working together to rest me for eight delicious hours. This particular bed was soft, allowing me to sink into the materials, but all Hästens systems are customized to customer preference during the manufacturing process by changing spring gauge, changing firmness from extra firm, medium firm and soft. Bringing this laptop to bed was futile as I fell asleep three minutes after watching a YouTube video.
Comfort and support are some of the most common reasons for disturbed sleep, and the way Hästens support beds are structured with a network of interoperable springs makes it feel like turning over in your sleep takes a lot. less effort (compared to a memory foam mattress, which requires to react to your every move). When making the bed, stronger springs are also placed in the corners to further improve edge support and maintain the structure. This engineering also benefits sleeping with a partner because the springs react individually, so that two people are essentially lying in their own separate spheres, without disturbing the other with their movements.
I woke up the next morning feeling like I had erased my sleep debt and was having trouble getting out of bed, not because I was tired but because I wanted to laze around a bit longer in soft materials. I never noticed that I spent the night with my laptop because I never woke up, sleeping all night in a supported position. I had none of my usual back or shoulder pain, which is quite common for me. Thanks to the Herlewing, I was able to get comfortable on my back and stay there, the healthiest sleeping position for snoozing.
I’m one of those sleepers who tends to wake up from sweating in bed, so to speak. On the Hästens, I realized that I had never moved, trying to cool off and get rid of the duvet. Memory foam is known for its heat retention due to its density as a material, which reduces airflow throughout the product. Basically, once a foam mattress absorbs body heat, it is not easy for it to escape. That’s no problem for Hästens products, which are breathable thanks to the inner spring system and heat and water resistant materials like horsehair and wool, keeping you cool on hot nights. and warm during cooler weather.
After two good nights, I was crying that I was going home to my current mattress situation, but I’m glad I had the opportunity to test out a top-notch sleep system. A good mattress keeps the body from seeking a more comfortable, supportive, or cooler position throughout the night, which results in more productive rest. So if sleep is so important and we spend a third of our lives doing it, splurging on a mattress is a smart long-term investment in your overall health, seemingly one of the most justifiable purchases we can do. Since the beds are completely customizable, anyone could fall in love with a Hästens bed. The only negative point is the price. I may need some sort of windfall before I think about getting a Hästens bed, but until then I will keep dreaming about it.
