The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, has released the names of the thirty-nine artists and collectives participating in the sixth edition of its Made in LA biennial, which will take place from October 1 to December 31. Titled “Acts of Living,” the exhibition is curated by independent curators Diana Nawi and Pablo José Ramírez, along with fellow curator Ashton Cooper.
The exhibition takes its name from an idea put forward by the late artist Noah Purifoy, that “you don’t have to be a visual artist to utilize creative potential. Creativity can be an act of life, a way of life and a formula for doing the right thing. The quote is inscribed on a plaque at the Watts Towers Arts Center in South LA, alongside the sculptures built by Simon Rodia that gave the center its name. In a statement, Nawi called Watts Towers “an example of how creative work can be intertwined with daily life and individual practice, leave room for community, and ultimately resonate far beyond. beyond himself”.
The exhibiting artists, all living and working in Southern California, range from twenty-five (Vincent Enrique Hernandez) to eighty-three (Jesse Homer French); one, the ceramist Luis Bermudez (1953-2021), is represented posthumously. Chicanx artists, including Victor Estrada, Guadalupe Rosales and Joey Terrill, and collectives, including AMBOS: Art Made Between Opposite Sides, will appear in force.
“Made in LA 2023 is inspired by the philosophy of Los Angeles, a place where a multiplicity of cultures coexist and where, as one artist told us, “one is always a visitor,” Ramírez said in a statement. “The artists and collectives that we have integrated into this biennale represent a wide range of art that is made in the city but also a diversity of the challenges of making art.
