Have you ever wanted to wear a work of art? Here is your chance: Hyperallergic is teaming up with eco-fashion brand JCRT and artist Nayland Blake to help launch ATDM, a new line of limited-edition clothing capsule collections created in collaboration with contemporary artists.
An acronym for “Artist, Title, Date, Medium”, ATDM has a inaugural collection designed by Nayland Blake which is available now. It includes two t-shirts and two camp-collar shirts featuring a graffiti-style bunny, a motif commonly used by the artist in his work, and the phrase “This is opposite-sex clothing.” With this twist on the language used in Arizona Senate Bill 1026 targeting drag, Blake, who is non-binary, intends these pieces to function as portable messages of resistance and support for trans people. and anyone caught wearing the “wrong” clothes.
Each style is limited to 100 editions, all of which are made to order, numbered and contain a “unique code” with the story behind the design as well as information on the brand’s sustainable practices. Using organic fabrics, the garments are made on demand, reducing the scale of the pre-printed garments that so often turn into untouched products in a landfill.
In honor of Pride Month, 100% of proceeds from the ATDM x Nayland Blake Shirts will be donated to the Transgender Law Center, the largest trans-led, trans advocacy organization in the United States. Once the 400 works have been sold, $30,000 will have been raised for the centre.
The transgender community remains vulnerable, largely due to legislative targeting and criminalization of LGBTQ+ culture And access to health care specifically for trans people. In 2023 alone, US state legislatures introduced a register more than 500 anti-LGBTQ+ invoices, over 200 of them targeting trans and non-binary people. Not only do these laws undermine the rights and well-being of transgender people, they also perpetuate discrimination, exclusion and harm. By actively opposing and overturning these bills, we can protect the dignity and equal treatment of all individuals, fostering a society that embraces diversity, inclusion and respect for the rights of trans people. .
