VOLTA Art Fair returns to New York with cutting-edge contemporary art

With a focus on the art of the present, this artist’s glimpse of Volta New York offers a strong reflection of the changing world we live in, with galleries from traditionally defined art market capitals and beyond.

SEIZAN Gallery (New York/Tokyo) presents Japanese artist Motohide Takami, whose work was impacted by the Great Earthquake of 2011. The disaster inspired the recurring image that appears in their oil paintings – that flames by the river. This refers to the Japanese expression, “fire across the river”, emphasizing human disinterest in tragic events that do not directly affect you.

Motohide Takami, “You(r desire) Ablaze” (2022), oil and chalk on panel, 160 x 160 x 3 cm, $12,000 (Galerie SEIZAN)

The Barcelona gallery Out of Africa (OOA) defends the work of contemporary African artists. Their display includes artwork that showcases African pride by Oluwole Omofemi, Matthew Eguavoen, Médéric Turay and Moses Zibor.

CUT ART (Riga, Latvia) presents the “ready-mades” of Korean artist Vlad Ogay, inspired by his studies in Russia. They also feature the work of Ukrainian artist Gamlet Zinkovsky, who previously represented Ukraine at the 53rd Venice Biennale and is now collaborating with the City X NFT project. This endeavor aims to preserve the art of avant-garde Ukrainian artists, whose fate is currently unknown due to the ongoing war.

Solo presentations for the 2023 edition include sculptures by Lithuanian artist Mindaugas Junčys on the (AV17) Gallery stand, Dominican artist Manuel Mera at the Catalysta Gallery and Irish artist Paul Hughes with the Stone Step Gallery.
