The Museum of Sex in New York has announced that Ariel Plotek will be its first chief curator. Plotek arrives at the institution from the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, where since 2018 he had been curator of fine arts. In his new role, Plotek will lead curatorial and collecting efforts at the Museum of Sex, planning and curating exhibitions in New York as well as those at the institution’s recently erected Miami branch, which is expected to open to the public this fall.

While at the O’Keeffe Museum, Plotek curated exhibitions such as “Georgia O’Keeffe: Making a Life”, which is on view until March 2024, and a 2021-2022 solo exhibition of Josephine’s work. Halvorson, the institution’s inaugural artist-in-residence. Prior to his tenure there, he was Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the San Diego Museum of Art, where he curated exhibitions by artists such as Nancy Lorenz and Ron Nagle. Plotek obtained his BA from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London; he obtained his doctorate. from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, where he studied with Linda Nochlin and Robert Rosenblum.
