Art Market Hamptons, the art fair held each summer in the popular seaside destination for many affluent New Yorkers, has canceled its 2023 edition and will hold its next edition in August 2024.
A spokesperson for the fair, which would have taken place in its 13th year near Bridgehampton, New York, about an hour from Manhattan, said the decision was made due to “unforeseen logistical issues”.
“Fair organizers have decided that it would be in the best interests of our partner galleries and patrons in attendance to postpone and focus our efforts on improving 2024,” the representative said in a statement.
Art Market Hamptons was previously known as Market Art + Design and was held in a pavilion at the Bridgehampton Museum. In 2022, the fair moved to Nova’s Ark Project and Sculpture Park, and approximately 90 galleries set up booths in a temporary structure on the grounds. The first edition of the fair under its new name and in the new location attracted nearly 10,000 visitors over its four days.
Galleries and auction houses began spread their footprints in the Hamptons during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, driving out customers who left New York for more space and nature during the shutdowns. Major galleries that opened seasonal popups and outposts in Southampton, East Hampton, and other communities on the southern branch of Long Island included Hauser & Wirth, Pace, Van de Weghe Fine Art, and Skarstedt. Christie’s, Phillips and Sotheby’s also bet summer exhibitions in the region in recent years.
Even before Covid-19, the Hamptons, which has long been a prime area for both the collecting class and big-name artists, was home to a group of established dealers including Eric Firestone, Ross + Kramer and Harper’s Books.
