Kate Fowle, former director of MoMA PS1, joins Hauser & Wirth

Kate Fowle has joined Hauser & Wirth as senior director of conservation, according to art news. She will be based in New York. Last June, UK-born Fowle caused a stir in the art world when she announced that she was departure as director of MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York; she had spent barely three years in the role, in which she succeeded longtime director Klaus Biesenbach, who LEFT at the head of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (he income in his native Germany to direct the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin). At Hauser & Wirth, Fowle will work closely with artists and artist estates to present exhibitions both inside and outside the gallery. Additionally, she will serve as a writer and editor for the gallery’s book publisher, Hauser & Wirth Publishers, and its magazine, Ursula.

Before arriving at MoMA PS1 in 2019, Fowle spent six years as chief curator of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, helping oversee the 2015 opening of its Rem Koolhaas-designed building and inaugurating the Triennial of the Garage two years later. Prior to working with Garage, she was executive director of the New York-based nonprofit Independent Curators International.
