A number of notable gongs from the art world have been doled out in the King’s Birthday Honors List (this year’s list is King Charles’ first for his official royal birthday in June). A round of applause first for Joe Scotland, director of Studio Voltaire in London, who was awarded an MBE for his services to the arts. Newly garlanded Joe is celebrating his 20th birthday at Studio Voltaire, and the gallery will be celebrating its 30th birthday next year. In 2021, Studio Voltaire reopened after a £2.8million overhaul; we highlighted that the non-profit art space housed in a former Methodist Victorian chapel in Clapham is a small organization with big impact, providing essential exhibitions to artists such as Phyllida Barlow, Anthea Hamilton and Charlotte Prodger. Other artistic figures honored include Deborah Swallow, the outgoing director of the Courtauld Institute, who is awarded a CBE. Swallow announced his retirement last year after 18 years in office. Hats off also to Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, who won an OBE for his artful spring exhibitions celebrated each year at the Met Gala (the latest offering is Karl Lagerfeld: a beauty lineuntil July 16).
