Versatile comedian and japester Joe Lycett is making waves in the art world with his eye-catching paintings and sculptures, including a rather eye-catching piece on display at the Royal Academy’s famous Summer Exhibition (until August 20). “Glad that my room I drink a crisp, cold beer in a pool in Los Angeles while [football commentator] Gary Lineker looks on in disgust was selected…this is my first painting to do so and only the second time I have been included (the first time was my famous sculpture Chris),” he wrote on Instagram. In 2018, Lycett submitted a bust called Chris, which he made of clay and a can of Pringles while drunk one night; the job was valued at £12.5m (by Lycett of course). Lycett hopes that Lineker’s work will also be there. “I can’t wait to see it and have some old sour arts reporter describe it as a ‘waste of paper and paint,'” he adds (thumbs up Joe of that sour old reporter).
