Jessie Shrieves stands as an artist known for her mesmerizing still-life flower paintings and a rich background in fine art. She embarked on her artistic journey by studying Fine Art at Parsons School of Design. Continuing her artistic education, Shrieves delved into the world of anatomy drawing in New York City, exploring the intricacies of the human form. One of the pivotal experiences in Shrieves’ artistic journey was her time at The Art Student League. Here, she had the opportunity to engage with a community of artists and learn from accomplished mentors. Among these mentors were Joe Steffinelli and Anthony Tony, who played a significant role in shaping Shrieves’ artistic sensibilities. The collaborative and inspiring environment at The Art Student League fostered her growth as an artist and allowed her to experiment with various mediums and styles.
Before Parsons School of Design became the New School, Shrieves had the privilege of enjoying classes with Joe Steffinelli. The unique aspect of her relationship with Steffinelli was her role as one of his portrait painting models. This hands-on experience not only provided her with a profound understanding of the human form but also deepened her connection to the art of portraiture.
Shrieves’ artistic exploration extended beyond the classroom as she took private sketching classes in the vibrant neighborhood of SoHo. The art scene in SoHo during that period was bustling, with Leo Castelli showcasing works of prominent artists. Shrieves had the chance to witness the exhibitions of big-name artists and immerse herself in the dynamic and evolving art community.
Reflecting on her experiences in SoHo, Shrieves fondly remembers a time when it was a small and close-knit community. The personal connections she formed with fellow artists during this period left an indelible mark on her. While she acknowledges the uncertainty of witnessing another era like that, she cherishes the memories of the warm and friendly people she met – not just great artists but genuine souls who shared a passion for art.
Among the artistic influences that have left an enduring impact on Shrieves, Monet holds a special place in her heart. Her soft spot for Monet’s work speaks to the timeless beauty and emotional resonance that art can evoke. Additionally, The Met, with its collection of favorite Dutch painters, serves as a wellspring of inspiration for Shrieves.
